Email Marketing Audit

Your emails are getting sent. Are they doing their job?

ending consistently doesn’t automatically mean your email marketing is working.

I’ll review your strategy, audience, campaigns, automations, segmentation, content, deliverability, and performance to understand how email is contributing to your marketing—and where opportunities may be getting missed.

Independent analysis. Clear priorities. No email management pitch.

Email Marketing Audit

Opens and clicks only tell part of the story.

A campaign can have a strong open rate without generating meaningful action.

An automated sequence can run quietly for years without anyone asking whether it still makes sense.

And a large subscriber list isn’t particularly valuable if the people on it aren’t engaged—or shouldn’t be receiving the same emails in the first place.

Sometimes the issue is the email itself. Sometimes it’s the audience, the timing, the offer, the automation, or what happens after someone clicks.

The goal isn’t to find more emails for you to send. It’s to understand whether your email marketing is reaching the right people, with the right message, at the right time—and doing something useful for the business.

What I Review

A high open rate doesn’t automatically mean email is working.

Good email metrics need context.

A 45% open rate sounds impressive.

But what happened next?

Did people click? Did they visit the website? Did they request a quote, schedule an appointment, make a purchase, return to the business, or take whatever action the email was intended to support?

And just as importantly: was that email supposed to drive an immediate conversion in the first place?

Not every email has the same job.

Some nurture a lead. Some bring a past customer back. Some educate. Some promote an offer. Some support retention. Others are designed to generate action right now.

I’m not looking for one perfect email metric. I’m looking at whether your email program is accomplishing what it’s supposed to accomplish.

Email Strategy + Purpose

Does your email program have a clear job to do?

I’ll review how email fits into your broader marketing strategy, what you’re using it to accomplish, who you’re communicating with, and whether your current activity supports those goals.

Audience + Segmentation

Are the right people receiving the right emails?

I’ll evaluate your lists, audience segments, targeting, suppression practices, and available subscriber data to understand how intentionally you’re communicating with different groups.

Campaign Content + Performance

What are you sending—and what happens when you do?

I’ll review campaign frequency, subject lines, messaging, design, calls-to-action, engagement, and performance patterns to understand what’s connecting with your audience and where there may be friction.

Automations + Customer Journeys

What’s happening when no one is manually hitting send?

I’ll evaluate relevant automated emails and sequences, including triggers, timing, messaging, logic, gaps, and how well those automations support the customer journey.

Deliverability + List Health

Are your emails actually reaching the people you’re sending them to?

I’ll review available deliverability and list-health signals, including engagement, bounces, unsubscribes, spam complaints, sending practices, and other issues that may affect inbox placement and overall email performance.

Measurement + Conversion

What happens after someone opens or clicks?

I’ll look at how email performance is being measured, which actions are treated as meaningful, and whether available tracking can connect email activity to website behavior, leads, purchases, bookings, or other relevant business outcomes.

When an Email Marketing Audit Makes Sense

You don’t need an audit because one email had a bad open rate.

  • You’re sending emails consistently but aren’t sure what they’re contributing to the business.
  • Your list is growing, but engagement isn’t.
  • Email performance has declined and you’re not sure why.
  • You have automations running that haven’t been reviewed in a long time.
  • Most subscribers receive essentially the same communication regardless of who they are.
  • You’re getting opens and clicks but can’t connect them to meaningful outcomes.
  • You’re concerned about deliverability, unsubscribes, or list quality.
  • You’ve changed your services, offers, positioning, or customer journey but your emails haven’t changed with them.
  • You’re paying an agency or provider for email marketing and want an independent assessment.
  • You want to know whether email deserves more—or less—of your marketing attention.

What You’ll Walk Away With

Not a list of 47 emails someone thinks you should start sending.

You’ll receive a clear assessment of how your email marketing is functioning, what the evidence suggests, and what deserves attention first.

  • Executive Summary: The email marketing findings that matter most and what they mean for the business.

  • Detailed Email Findings: What’s working, potential issues, performance patterns, automation gaps, audience opportunities, and other findings identified during the review.

  • Prioritized Recommendations: Clear recommendations organized by importance so you know where I’d focus first.

  • 90-Day Focus: A practical roadmap for the email marketing priorities that deserve attention over approximately the next three months.practical roadmap for what deserves attention over approximately the next three months.
  • Final Audit Report: A report you can keep or share directly with your existing agency, email marketing provider, internal team, or another partner.

  • Audit Review Meeting: A one-on-one walkthrough of the findings, recommendations, and your questions.

What happens between “Subscribe” and “Become a Customer”?

Your email strategy is more than your newsletter.

For many businesses, some of the most important emails aren’t the campaigns someone schedules every month. They’re the messages triggered by what a customer or prospect actually does.

I’ll look at how email supports the journey from initial interest through conversion and beyond.

Depending on your business and setup, that could include:

  • Welcome — What happens after someone first joins your list?
  • Lead nurture — Are prospects receiving useful follow-up while they’re still considering their options?
  • Customer follow-up — Does communication continue appropriately after someone converts?
  • Re-engagement — Is there a strategy for subscribers or customers who haven’t interacted in a while?
  • Cross-sell or repeat business — Are there natural opportunities to stay connected with existing customers?
  • Behavior-based communication — Are relevant actions triggering useful emails—or are opportunities being missed?
  • Gaps — Are there important points in the customer journey where email could play a useful role but currently doesn’t?

And importantly, this doesn’t mean I’ll automatically recommend creating ten new automations.

Email Marketing Audit

FAQ

Clarity starts with knowing what to expect.

An email marketing audit is a structured review of how your email program is set up and performing. Full Audit’s review can include strategy, campaigns, audience segmentation, automations, content, engagement, deliverability, list health, measurement, and alignment with your broader marketing goals.

No. Full Audit provides independent analysis and recommendations rather than ongoing email production or management. Your recommendations can be implemented by your internal team, existing agency, email provider, or another partner.

Yes, when automations are part of the agreed audit scope. I’ll evaluate relevant triggers, timing, sequence structure, messaging, performance, and how the automation fits into the customer journey.

Deliverability and list-health signals can be reviewed as part of the audit. If the findings point to a highly technical infrastructure or deliverability issue requiring specialized remediation, I’ll identify the concern and recommend the appropriate next step rather than pretending it’s within my implementation scope.

Then that belongs in the findings. Full Audit doesn’t need to find something wrong to make the audit worthwhile. The goal is to give you an independent understanding of what’s working, what could be stronger, and what—if anything—deserves attention.

Not necessarily. List size alone doesn’t determine whether an audit is useful. What’s more important is how actively you’re using email, the role it plays in your marketing, and whether there’s enough activity and data to evaluate meaningfully.
